A Young Man Grows Up

My step-son, Gabriel was called to the Torah Saturday, December 8, 2012.  I was so proud to present him with his Tallit and kippah that day.  I don't think I have ever experienced anything like it.  I am so proud of him!

Commando Socks

I finished making my Commando socks in time to send them to my sister for an early birthday present.  I love the way they turned out and socks are still my favorite thing to knit.

Tallit Update

I have been making a lot of headway on Gabriel's tallit.  I have one colored stripe left and two cream areas.  After I finish knitting the main body, it is on to the fringe and the prayer that goes around the collar.  We have chosen to use Shema Yisra'el... (Hear, Israel).  This prayer is beautiful in it's simplicity.  Here is the first line of the prayer in Hebrew, transliteration and English.
Sh'ma Yisra'eil Adonai Eloheinu Adonai echad.
Hear, Israel, the Lord is our G-d, the Lord is One.

It's been a long time since I blogged about my knitting.   (I have gotten lazy since I started using Ravelry.)  I have started working on a big project for this year - a tallit for Gabriel's bar mitzvah.  Thanks to the generosity of Annie Modesitt for sharing her pattern with me.  I'm attempting to do it using charts for the first time.  (Keeping my fingers crossed!)  I want to try and finish it before I start college in the fall because I know I won't have as much time for knitting after I start.  Here's a picture of the swatch.  I am using Knitpick's Shine Sport which is a lovely yarn that is a cotton acrylic mix that is nice and lightweight for Florida weather.

Gabriel's Torah portion is Va-yeishev (Genesis 37: 1-40:23), the story of Joseph and the turmoil with his brothers.  The story is what Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is based on so I decided to change up Gabriel's tallit from the original white and blue and do the stripes with rainbow colors.
